Our show with Izabella on 9/6 at 12 Galaxies was cancelled due to the unfortunate closure of 12 Galaxies. We appreciate all that Robert has done for the community, and we are so sorry to see that venue close. The members of SOE will all be at the Connecticut Yankee on 9/6 for Izabella's rescheduled show. Hope you'll come out to support that show. Support your local venues, so that they do not fall to the same fate as 12Gs!!!

Come on down to the Connecticut Yankee on Friday, Sep 12th for 2 sets of California Rock with Seconds on End! Its been a while since SOE performed at the Yankee, so please do expect a whole different experience with Seconds on End. This band has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, and promises to put on a fantastic show! We're celebrating Geraldine's birthday this night, so we hope you can be there to wish her a happy birthday.

'The Bright Side' of 12 Galaxies Closing (CAUTION: SARCASM)

The good news is this event official marks the end of SF's long-running cultural identity crisis.

Everyone who still feels like they still fit in in SF can now breathe easy, having put out of his mind what kind of fun anyone might
be having down in the Mission district and drive his SUV in an even more relaxed manner back home each night to the Richmond or Sunset to enjoy smoking pot and watching endless Tivo reruns of Seinfeld until he collapses conveniently into a solitary heap of incarnate complacency.

SF's social successes just went from 'smug' to 'more smug than thou'. See what happens on the site of 12 Galaxies and THEN try to tell me I was wrong about this. Just wait and try.

You can tell them all I didn't bother to say 'hi' while they're hitting all your asses with the door.

Whatever.

F***ing waste of a city.

'Enjoy'.

Artist Discussion Salon & CELLspace Call to Arms

We have been planning this discussion on arts and media production for some time but it's even more appropriate in the face of what is going on. Keep your eyes peeled for the new Executive Director of Black Rock Arts Foundation, joining us for panel discussion!

Artist Salon and Reception for the Expo for the Artist and Musician
Thursday, September 13th 7:30-10:30
CELLSpace (2050 Bryant) SF

free admission
free drinks and snacks
arts and media panels - discussion and Q&A

live music - visual art show
puppetry workshop(canceled due to CELLspace woes, see below)
sewing class

This salon is part of the lead-in for an astounding event happening at SomArts that weekend, designed to bring artists, musicians, and the people who make it all happen together to meet each other and talk about their work. At CELLSpace we will have an art show in the gallery, puppetry and sewing workshops in the loft, musicians, free drinks and food, and panel discussions. The discussions will revolve around the ideas of producing arts, media, and change from a non-profit and for-profit perspective. What are the benefits of each format? How can artists navigate the world between the two for maximum freedom and maximum funding? Bay Area heavies from both sides of the fence will discuss why they have chosen the structure that they have and how they use it to get what they want.

BREAKING NEWS - CELLspace is facing massive crisis and needs your help! We will give the microphone to someone from the organization who can tell you all about what is going on and how you can get involved. Get your news fresh from the trenches. We love this community resource and want to fight to keep it! http://pandorastrunk.com http://artsandmedia.net/expo

Since February 2003, the Government of Sudan has perpetrated genocide
on the indigenous African tribes of Darfur. Rape and sexual violence
against women and children have been persistent, widespread and noted
repeatedly by many human rights groups as well as the United Nation's
2005 International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur. Reports from many
sources indicate a realistic estimate of the number of victims to be
in the tens of thousands. Sexual violence against Darfur women is both
a human rights and public health crisis. Victims endure physical
injuries, unwanted pregnancies, miscarriages and other reproductive
complications, psychological illness, ostracism by their husbands and
families, and accusations of adultery. As estimated 90% of Darfur
women have been subjected to Female Genital Cutting, making them more
vulnerable to injury, AIDS infection and other sexually transmitted
diseases from sexual assault. Most victims suffer the debilitating
effects of sexual violence in silence, isolation and depression.

The services of the Darfur Women's Centers are urgently needed for the
near-term treatment of survivors, and are crucial for the long-term
evolution of services for women's health throughout Darfur.

Radio Moscow in this episode

I also wrote up a review of the Radio Moscow show from 12 Galaxies from last Sunday. What a great show. Take a look at http://freeradiosf.com/blog/22

In the meantime:

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.

http://johnhell.podomatic.com

The show I'm sorry I missed the most was Slim Cessna, so I happily put him in this episode.

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.

"To say Patrick Sweany is just a Blues musician is like saying Coke is just a soft drink. A Sweany set can veer from soulful, slow burn, John Lee Hooker-style blues to swampy, delta-country pickin' to white-hot rockabilly...Sweany has arrived as a major talent."

RADIO MOSCOW
Www.myspace.com/radiomoscow
With a nod to previous purveyors of garage blues, Radio Moscow has elements of MC5, Blue Cheer and Cream in their songs. At the ripe age of 22, Griggs rips solos like there's no tomorrow and some tunes even feature multiple solo work. The band is a trio but their sound is full and loud, not unlike another trio, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. - The Area Scene

Artist of the Day on Spin.com : marrying the bluesy psychedelic fervor of Cream with the big, precise fretwork of Jimi Hendrix, Radio Moscow relish in distortion and grittiness. Prevalent are themes of heartache, heartbreak, and drug intake, sometimes accompanied by instrumental forays into tumbleweeding country ("Lickskillet") and East Indian-influenced soundscapes ("Ordovician Fauna").

RIDE THE BLINDS
"The Bay Area's Ride the Blinds are blues rockers in the tradition of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and more recently, the North Mississippi All Stars."

Inside A Broken Clock: A Tom Waits Peepshow - TONIGHT AND TOMORROW NIGHT!!

Inside A Broken Clock: A Tom Waits Peepshow
Thursday, June 28th and Friday, June 29th
9PM @ 12 Galaxies, 2565 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA
$15

Characters from the Tom Waits pantheon come to life through Vaudevillian comedy, burlesque, puppetry, and more all set to the music of Waits performed live by The No Salvation Army Band - Austin’s finest junkyard musicians.

If you haven’t seen or heard about this surprising phenomenon, here’s the story in a nutshell: Choreographer Ellen Stader and music scholar Rick McNulty, like many Austinites, love the music of Tom Waits. In 2005 these two (a.k.a. RubyRico Peepshows) chose 18 songs by the legendary songwriter, humbly asked—and received—permission to perform them, and then set about writing an original script, arranging the songs and choreographing more than a dozen dances for a sweet, creepy , sexy, funny evening of cabaret.

The show featured over 20 actors, dancers, singers and puppeteers from companies all over Austin, as well as a 10-piece band—the No Salvation Army Band, formed especially for the show. The cast includes a dancing bear, German prostitutes, a mad inventor, a dancing skeleton, Vegas showgirls and a leering Ringmaster, among other attractions.

Meltone tonight!

Japanese jamband! Psychedelic jams and grooves!
also with Isabella

9pm

$15

Meltone
After years of being known primarily as an importer of live improvisational music, Japan finally has an export making waves on foreign shores. Since the turn of the century, Meltone has made Japan proud as her first native sons to enter the "Jamband revolution." Formed in 2000 by Shin-Ichiro Tomita (guitar), Takuya Fukano (bass) and Keisuke Ishizawa (keyboard) Meltone Strives to transmit the joyous nature of "summer festival vibes" through their music.

The two guitarists are old friends who agree that if something feels right, it inevitably sounds good. Tomita explains, "Meltone was started not to become famous but to build a foundation for Japan's jamband community." In 2001, the power quartet was solidified with the addition of drummer Shunsuke Sugasawa. In reverence to the magic surrounding the Grateful Dead's performances, Meltone hopes to share an evolved version of that euphoria with their budding fans.

Together now for five years, Meltone has woven an original style from a mixed bag of sonic cloth. Fukano elaborates, "We're influenced by every kind of music we can get. There is no band we can single out because we all have different tastes." They are quickly developing into serious songwriters with a well-balanced vocal presence, most notably Tomita with his bewitching baritone. The wild-haired front man often propels the climactic energy over the brim, soaring through complex rhythmic labyrinths with his blazing guitar. Meltone's ambitious compositions are rooted in Western exploration while paying respect with subtle Japanese brush strokes.

Meltone made their U.S. debut playing a few Midwest dates during the summer of 2004. Right around that time they reached their nation's biggest stage at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. It was only a year later at the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA when they band's smoldering sets cemented their reputation as a new jamband phenomenon.

Touring in support of their new album, New Wave, Meltone returned in 2006 to wow the High Sierra crowds yet again. This time they followed it up with a brief California tour which revealed the strongholds of support they've already established. Fans are eagerly awaiting their return in May of 2007.

Isabella
http://www.izabellaband.com

IZABELLA was born out of years of musical connections. Like many bands before, and many yet to come, the search for new music is what ultimately brings these musicians together. The love of the improvisational/jam community is what drives and inspires them to push forward. Sean Lehe (guitar/vocals), Lucas Carlton (drums) and Murph (bass/guitar) spent four years recording and touring with Bay Area jamband, Home At Last. With a desire for a fresh start, the trio decided in the spring of 2006 to branch out with a new face and renewed sense of purpose. After years of networking in the scene, close connections were made with some of the most talented players around. As a result, the trio has grown to a seven-piece machine following a musical merger with Sacramento based “Four Guys From Reno”. The Sacramento boys bring the kitchen sink percussion of Shawn King, the soulful energy of Brian Rogers (vocals/bass/percussion/guitar) the blissful embellishments of Andre Fylling (keyboards/vocals) and the chunky funk of Sam Phelps (bass/guitar/keys/vocals). Brian, Andre and Sam have been musical brothers since High School and have already created an impressive legacy of solo recordings.

Howdy radio fans.

I've just posted my latest podcast: A Season In Hell
#4: Everything Goes To Hell.

It runs about an hour. It's certainly not the same as
radio, but I do try to make it sound like it is. It
lacks the spontanaiety of radio that I miss so much.
Other than that, I get to turn you all onto music that
I love. I found some good new sounds to mix with some
tasty classics from my collection.

Find the podcast online here:
http://johnhell.podomatic.com/

And on iTunes here;
Tell your friends. Also, send me a note if you have
any requests or suggestions. I'm just getting warmed
up.

Enjoy.
THOR
www.thorcentral.com/index.html
Jon Mikl THOR is an enduring icon of glam rock/metal, and one of the true originators of rock theatre. THOR's enviable career got off the ground with his appearance on the Merv Griffin Show in 1973 and he has maintained a steady pace ever since, selling hundreds of thousands of records. Over the last three decades, THOR has explored the tongue-in-cheek Sweet/Mott the Hoople/Bowie stylings, hard hitting metal moves of the 80's, and flirting briefly with Nu- Rock/Metal in the late 90's.

Starting out in Vancouver, THOR first made waves in the bodybuilding world, becoming Mr. Canada and Mr. USA, always using heavy music as an intensive training tool. He blended his powerful physique with powerful rock, and thus began this amazing cult legend's long reign in the hazy area between superstardom and the dark underground.

Along the way he has become a movie actor and producer, turning out collectible classics like Rock & Roll Nightmare, Zombie Nightmare, Graveyard, and others. Most recently, THOR is appearing in the upcoming USA Network movie Murder At The Presidio, and starring in the soon-to-be-released The Intercessor. And even more movie news
will be released soon.

THOR is still an immensely powerful man in incredible shape and a dedicated performer. Blowing up hot water bottles, bending steel, and having cinder blocks broken over his chest are all in a night's work. THOR has successfully managed to re-invent himself once again. The legions of fans are still there and new generations are finding out for themselves that THOR is just as cool now as he ever was in 1978, 1985, or 1999.

THOR was voted one of the Greatest 100 Frontmen of All Time in the July, 2004 edition of the UK's Classic Rock Magazine - a list compiled by polling professional Rock journalists (bio)
Meet the strangest known band from the pre-punk dayze of glam. A sound like no other and a story as out there as the The Monks. We're talking commitment here - spacesuits, Spock ears, even antennae feelers - onstage, on the street, and wherever they made the scene. ZOLAR-X spoke their own language, and insisted they really were from outer space to anyone who could get past their, er, unique hairdos long enough to listen. Fans of Devo, Chrome, or Iggy should truly rejoice...

Zazen Bay Area Tour

The band Zazen, and their new side project fwap, is gearing up to bring rocking, symphonic soundscapes to the Bay Area. Core members, guitar virtuoso Joaquin Lievano and genius bassist Andy West, both multi-time Grammy nominees, have announced that they will be performing in the Bay Area at three universities, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley and Stanford.

Lievano, who previously toured or recorded with Jean Luc Ponty, the Warriors with Narada Michael Walden, Airto Moreira, Yanni, Terry Bozzio, Shiela E., Angela Bofill and many other world class artists, “has shown prowess, versatility and most critically, an impressive depth of feeling with whomever he's played", wrote Ric Levine in Home Theater. West, who was a founding member of pioneer progressive rock band Dixie Dregs, has played with many of the world’s most luminous prog-rock musicians, including Henry Kaiser, Steve Morse, Mike Portnoy, Rod Morgenstein, Vinnie Moore, Paul Barrerre, Mike Keneally and Prairie Prince. West never disappoints in his bold, aggressive playing, pushing to new heights in all of his musical ventures.

Zazen has been acclaimed by critics and fans alike for producing exciting, riveting electrical compositions that are deeply moving, reflecting the likes of classical masters in their purity and strength of composition. fwap creates music dynamically, allowing the musicians to fully utilize their extensive experience in creative, real time compositions while retaining rhythmical patterns of musical cohesion.
"...Flags of the Sacred Harp is what they jumped back in the ring with. And a fine return it is. Surely their most coherent release, Sacred Harp is a burnt-out, dead-end road, fuzztrack for all those things you do after three in the morning. If Skip Spence had a pretty girl with a pretty voice to duet with, it might have sounded a bit like this."

"The stories that make up Tarentel's existence are almost as dramatic and hard to follow as their musical trajectory. The San Francisco group started in the mid-90s as an outlet for guitarists Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Danny Grody to make left-of-center instrumental guitar suites. Their sound and vision proved very infectious, drawing in more collaborators and full-fledged members than anyone has time to count."

Sic Alps are a dynamic duo of over-blown, fuzzed-out, feedback-filled, gut-thumping rock with a hint of blues leaking in through the noise."
San Francisco-based BURMESE spew forth a bile stuffed plume of thick dirge on their third full length. Recorded by Weasel Walter this blackened-to-the-core slab manages to fuse the bleak Whitehouse (the band not the building) world vision to an underwater plastic explosive dolphin attack on all that is right and just with family values. The sounds here tend to generate comparisons to mud pilots like the SWANS and EYEHATEGOD except that BURMESE use two drums AND two basses. Previous records for Planaria and Tumult have sketched out a similar murky vision, but this record raises fidelity to a notch nearer to the seconds right before the hammer falls on any given weekend's convenience store heist. Not depressing musically, just very realistic and heavy. Features a member of the current FLYING LUTTENBACHERS! Has played with DON CABALLERO, LIGHTNING BOLT, and ERASE ERRATA.
Load Records

"...heavy and droney, their sound is less slow motion sludge and more blown out fuzzy psych rock. A blurry druggy mix of Hawkwind, the Dead C, Comets On Fire, Residual Echoes, Dead Meadow and Bardo Pond. The Daturas' sound is all over the map, from churning, throbbing fuzzdrug churn, with squealing feedback and choppy uneven riffing, to drifting dreamy stripped down post rock, all careening wildly between thick swaths of super overdriven psych fuzz, and drenched in crumbly distortion and all manner of wah. When they kick out the jams, it's fierce and mesmerizing, pounding and relentless, with simple propulsive percussion and spaced out swirl. Often stretching out into head nodding Krautrock jams, spacious and hypnotic. When the storms calm and the band drifts off and just sort of meanders, we're reminded of Codeine and other like minded practitioners of drowsy, druggy slow core. Still noisy, but mellow and intense, brooding and subtly aggressive. "

"Die! Die! Die! are a three-piece band originally from Duendin but now based in Auckland that in just over a year, have solidified their reputation as one of New Zealand's best new bands. With an emphasis on rhythm and volume, Die! Die! Die! create a driving sound that is immediate and visceral, while retaining enough melody to keep their songs in your head long after their short set has come to a close.

Formed in November 2003, Die! Die! Die! quickly bought a van and started playing as many shows in as many towns as they could in both New Zealand and Australia, including both Homebake and Meredith festivals, support slots for Wire and Franz Ferdinand, two large-scale national tour supports already this year for the reformed Straightjacket Fits and then the renamed Shihad, and numerous shows in the USA and UK.

Die! Die! Die! left New Zealand in March 2005 for an extensive tour of the USA - where they recorded their debut album with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac) at his studio Electrical Audio in Chicago - before heading to the UK and Sweden."
Dengue Fever
"If the name Dengue Fever doesn't give you enough of an idea about this band's psychedelic tropical heat, how about this: The lead singer is Cambodian pop star Ch'hom Nimol; the sax player, David Ralicke, plays with Beck; guitarist Zac Holtzman used to be in Dieselhed; and the bassist is Senon Williams of the Radar Brothers. Started by Holtzman and his brother Ethan after an inspiring trip to Cambodia (where a friend of Ethan's did, in fact, contract dengue fever), Dengue Fever's first self-titled record covered Cambodian pop songs from the '60s. Escape From Dragon House is the band's second record, and is composed of mostly original songs sung in Khmer, with surf-rock guitars, Ethiopian rhythms, Farfisa organ and Bollywood-style theatrics. It sounds like the soundtrack to the Asian version of a not-campy Gidget."

Black Fiction
"All the indie kids are atwitter about Black Fiction — and it's no wonder. The band might be San Francisco's answer to the Arcade Fire, if the Arcade Fire took a time machine to the late-'60s/early '70s for a peyote-laced vision quest in the desert. Born out of quirky folk-pop band Feller Quentin, Black Fiction make music like a warped radio transmission from another time. Most of the wide-ranging instrumentation — fiddles, acoustic guitars, melodica, and a variety of percussion — has an organic, earthy sound, and even the keyboards and samples are tinged with nostalgia. "(LH)

Future Pigeon
"Future Pigeon is a nine piece band hailing from Echo Par, California that incorporates elements of Jamaican dub, punk, world, psychedelic rock, and dance music to create their own hybrid form that is completely unique in this day and age. They have a live soundman that pushes their sonic assault into the triple digits of intensity.

In 1997, Jason Mason (Wiskey Bisquit) and Eddie Ruscha (Medicine, Maids Of Gravity, Dada Munchamonkey) shared a common interest in Brian Eno and dub music. Wanting to create music like their heros (i.e.Jamaican dub pioneers Le Perry, King Tubby, Scientist and Prince Jammy)they set out to record their own backing tracks on an old Tascam reel to reel 8 track machine to mix through walls of space echos and effects. Enlisting musician friends who stopped by to partake in ancient smoking rituals, they amassed hours upon hours of psychedelic music."

"With its serpentine riffs that take their sweet time to uncoil and its sludgy, off-kilter tempos, Pearl and Brass has no doubt learned some valuable lessons from Josh Homme's Queens of the Stone Age. But no one can teach the intangibles, like how to add heavy to the metal. By combining math-rock complexity with raw power on The Indian Tower, songs like ''Tower'' and ''Black Rock Man'' hypnotize as they pulverize."

THE FUCKING CHAMPS
"Eschewing ties to traditional rock formats, the Champs settled on a lineup with no vocalist or bass player and at times only three guitarists playing together onstage. With their relocation to San Francisco in 1994 and the addition of Tim Green (the guitarist and engineer for the chaotic and revered Nation of Ulysses, the Fakes, and Young Ginns), the Fucking Champs found their guitar-focused compositions increasing in complexity while their lyrics, like a vestigial organ, withered away. Green and Soete's developing interest in electronic music and collaborations on their burgeoning electronic label, Louder Records, became a divergent complement to the heavier-than-hell instru-metal they'd been perfecting."

I am now sitting at 12 G's, way too early after last night, supervising the install of a 6x9 foot screen, so that we may project the Superbowl bigger than if we were even there. Trust me after 2 years I can safely say that having the game that big and over our sound system is a fucking blast, even if you don't like football. We aren't charging, there is going to be tons of free food, kickoff time is 3:20pm. If you don't have any other plans today, come watch me nurse a hangover and a little football as well.

We open at 1pm
Gametime at 3pm

Townes Van Zandt is widely recognized as a true songwriter's songwriter, a musician whose brilliance and lyrical insight made him popular amongst fans and musicians alike. Van Zandt had a profound impact on generations of musicians from Bob Dylan to Norah Jones, yet the commercial success enjoyed by many of his own peers eluded him. In her debut feature, director Margaret Brown focuses on Van Zandt‚s attempts at overcoming his personal demons and live his life for his art ˆ to „blow everything off∑get a guitar and go!‰ Her haunting and lyrical film, BE HERE TO LOVE ME combines interviews of friends and family with never seen footage of lost performances and intimate portraits in Van Zandt‚s own home throughout the years. Featuring interviews and footage with J.T. Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Guy Clarke, Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson, BE HERE TO LOVE ME is an artful and poetic portrait of Van Zandt's life and career. The film was directed by Margaret Brown, produced by Sam Brumbaugh and shot by cinematographer Lee Daniel. The film was executive produced by Paul Stekler and Louis Black. www.townesthemovie.com/

"...dame satan's debut full-length, is a worthy addition to the nebulous canon of the creepy folk jam. the soaring harmonies bouncing from rafter to cob-webbed rafter, the scraping of steel strings, the banjo's sharp cackle, the warm hum of an ancient blues guitar - they conjure up the sad haunted corners of a vast empty house where grim stories lurk untold and smoke curls from spectral pipes."

"Lucas recounts his woeful stories slowly and deliberately, blurring the line between nightmares and dreams. Past the roadside bars and whorehouses, down a featureless two-lane highway to oblivion: he isn't afraid..."

"Out of Marin County, Calif., comes Jesse DeNatale, an artist who preserves the art of storytelling with thoughtful, detailed verses inspired by his serene, mountainous environs. DeNatales gritty vocals have the worn, Tom Waits-style quality of one whos weathered more than a few storms, while his melodies pack soul, folk and country into a suitcase of fine American roots."

Hey kids,

Very late notice on this I know, but if you're enjoying the lull between Xmas and NYE when nobody expects much of anything from their worker drones, come out tonight (12/28) and get an earful at 12 Galaxies:

Banyan -- superstar punk jazz w/ Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, etc), Nels Cline (guitar god currently working as Wilco's secret weapon), trumpet player Willie Waldman, background painter Norton Wisdom (I know that sounds lame, but the guy is actually pretty mindblowing) plus likely special guest Steve MacKay (who blew the wicked sax on the Stooges album Funhouse)

Eric McFadden Trio -- local guitar badass who plays w/ P-Funk and a bunch of others

Sistas in the Pit -- hard all women funk trio

and me, Sasquatch Borracho, spinning a bizarro mix of punk, funk, fusion and whatnot.

Tix are $12-$15, but I can assure you that the first time you see Banyan you will be blown away by their electric Miles Davis style mayhem. I'll be spinning well before 9pm doors, so come down and say hi if you're free...

ORANGER
"Eight years and four full-length albums into their career, SF's cultiest power pop/psych band has a new drummer and guitarist, a rougher, more live-sounding CD, a bassist they share with the Posies and one seriously limping keyboard player. Since their last album, Oranger have replaced long-time drummer Jim Lindsay with ex-Mother Hips skinsman John Hofer and added guitarist Bob Reed, who was also in Overwhelming Colorfast with Mike Drake and Matt Harris."

THE RUM DIARY
"The Rum Diary is based out of Cotati, California, a small town in Sonoma County (about 50 miles north of San Francisco). While Cotati offers the best in "that good old cow town feeling" The Rum Diary occupies a small practice space out in the country and toil away creating a "visual-sound". The Rum Diary has been writing, performing and recording original songs in the tradition of Mogwai, 3 mile pilot, and Dianogah since inception in early 2000. Combining two drum kits, double bass guitar, Farfisa, Moog, a medley of layered guitars, percussion, melodica, and soft vocals, The Rum Diary has created a sound that is thought provoking, experimental and beautiful."
HALCYON HIGH
"Halcyon High deals in psychedelia, but not the embarrassingly pretentious kind with "La-La-La" choruses and Americans faking British accents. If you're a fan of Spacemen 3 and their offshoots, The Verve's early albums or just beautiful noise and reverb-soaked electric psych/drone that's more fluffy clouds than deep space, this is right up yer alley."
THE FLESHTONES
LOSIN STREAKS
GO GOING GONE GIRLS

@ 12 Galaxies
9:30 pm
$10/12

THE FLESHTONES
Formed in New York City in 1976, the Fleshtones reaped some of the benefits of the city's punk scene although their retro '60s sound shared little common ground with the punks, save Blondie and the Ramones. The Fleshtones recorded their debut for punk guru Marty Thau's Red Star Records in 1978 but when the label folded before its release (it was finally issued by ROIR in 1982 as Blast Off) the band moved to legendary new wave label IRS. The Fleshtones' IRS years were their finest as recording artists, resulting in the Up Front EP (1980, featuring the classic "The Girl from Baltimore") and the albums Roman Gods (1981), Hexbreaker (1983, largely acknowledged as their best album), and Speed Connection (1985). After the IRS deal ended, the Fleshtones continued recording for a number of small labels and have released 16 albums to date. More importantly, the Fleshtones have toured their asses off, and their live shows have established their legend. The band has carried the garage rock torch for almost 30 years now, dishing out its self-proclaimed "Super Rock" to a cult-like following."

The LOSIN STREAKS
"As easy as the three-chord proto-punk tunes found on Lenny Kaye's classic Nuggets compilation might be to play, too many garage revivalists confuse raw primitivism with outright sloppiness. Not so with the Sacramento-based thugs who make up Th' Losin Streaks, who bring the kind of snarling swagger to their raucous debut that would do their fuzzed-out forebears proud."
Dave Pehling
http://www.the-troublemakers.com/losinstreaks.html

GO-GOING-GONE GIRLS
The Go-Going-Gone Girls are a live act, a sensory experience that defies auditory limits. Oh sure, they sound, but the G4s are holistic practitioners on pink pedestals, transcending form and fashion, time and technology.* Their performances are not just seen and heard, but felt at a visceral—even primal—level. And though this trio of hair-hopping hoofers may worship at the alter of their frolicking forbearers, they are nothing if not au courant. Backed by an all-star four-piece lineup, they deliver a dexterous and distinctive blend of 60's go-go, soul, bubblegum, girl-group, and garage. Hear them sing, wail, scream, harmonize, plead, beg, and shout from atop their totemic pedestals. See them shimmy, shake, twist, dog, monkey, duck, bird, funky chicken, and pony like their ancestors of yore. Smell the musk generated by your fellow audience members as they wiggle, jerk, groove, watusi, peel, hully gully, hand jive, and slop to the ancient rhythms. Taste the sweat on your own lips as you are swept away by the sacred rituals of the mashed potato, the Madison, the hanky panky, the frug, the popcorn, and the bugaloo. Feel the band camelwalk, locomotion, skate, swim, stroll, and hitchhike their way into your heart.

Either way, they are, as one lyric puts it, 'locofoco motherfuckers.' What they are not is a crew of stylistically strangled retropunx. Or posturing rock gods, waiting patiently for their set to end so they can scam starry-eyed groupies. No, Fleshies are, simply, a force of Id.
."They make the familiar sound foreign, they spot out that reflex mechanism of ours that yearns for nostalgia and they tap it with a ball-peen hammer, and the sensation feels funny and natural. The musicians' record collections include the Velvet Underground, the Wedding Present, the usual suspects, but it's their talent to draw on these influences without aping anyone in particular: That's what separates the Herms from nearly every other band digging for gold in the same long-barren hills of classic influences. Here's a band that can remind you of great bands, and still be great in its own right."
Ebb and Flow
"From the first notes of Time to Echolocate, you can tell there's something special happening on this eight track album. The instrumentation is complex and eclectic, perfectly complementing the female vocals of Roshy Kheshti and male vocals of Sam Tsitrin. Sprawling tracks build, move, sustain, and dismantle in an extraordinary way. Not afraid to bust out a Moog synthesizer, horns, or even vibes, The Ebb and Flow have carved out their own niche in the modern music world. Highly recommended. A+ "

I haven't seen much on tonights band,
but for those who like their non traditional bluegrass,
Sunday is the night to chill at 12 Galaxies.

from their website:
Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the members of Trampled by Turtles blend hints of grunge, punk, alt-country, and pop with the traditional sounds of the acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass. The last two years have been spent playing venues ranging from punk-rock basement parties to the Great American Music Hall, sharing the stage with a diverse group of musicians including Low, The Radiators, Pedro the Lion, Nickel Creek, and Charlie Parr.

This is a great show-- all three of these guys are absolutely astounding!

Come check it!

GREG ASHLEY [GRIS GRIS]
"Like fellow Texan-bred Roky Erickson and Mayo Thompson, infused with a little Syd Barret and Skip Spence (and maybe even a little Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel), Ashley creates atmospheric pop meanderings that are filled with sentimental purpose and dark fuzzy edges."

TOM BROSSEAU
“Brosseau is a man in and out of time. Echoes of old train songs, 1930s-era
legends like Jimmy Rodgers, and quasi-yodeling show up without apology or
shtick. A weirdly fetching song like "I Tune My Guitar to the Hum of the
Train," from his wonderful eponymous 2002 album (on Relax Bed Pan records),
buries its musical head in an earlier, simpler time. He can be hauntingly
moody and atmospheric, and avoids easy garden-variety verse-chorus-bridge
song structures in his writing. In short, Brosseau is onto something new by
way of something old, deep, twangy, and altogether worth hearing.”
www.tombrosseau.com

MERIC LONG
Electro-folk? Indie-folk? There is no precise genre for Meric Long's undeniably reflective and intensely personal songs... but his are the songs that draw you in and insist that you listen. While the delivery and feel of Meric's songs is tender, the songs convey an underlining hint of frustration, anger, confusion which makes each song genuine and both from and to the heart. Meric's beautifully sorrowful vocals ride smoothly on intricate finger picking and his skill in song crafting makes 24 year old Meric Long a talent to keep both eyes open for.

"A polished and multi-layered exploration of danceable beats, synthesized textures and industrial riffing, the album is rounded out with early Bowie-esque vocals and dark sensibilities. It's an absorbing venture into sonic territory that's as rich as it is modernistic."

SOME BY SEA

"Some By Sea formed in 2003. This debut album is astonishingly perfectly formed, in the mould of alternative darlings such as Death Cab for Cutie and The Shins. Angular, indie-pop with layers of wonderful depth, Some By Sea also recall tunesmiths such as Fountains of Wayne, Marcy Playground and XTC. The carefully interwoven acoustic/ electric guitar layers, cello, vocal backing, and piano behind clever, Snow Patrol/ Reindeer Section-like lyrics more than tops Death Cab in appeal. Steering away from The Shins’ occasional smug artifice, Get Off The Ground has some outstanding songs with massive dramatic tension between angst-ridden verses and sweetly resolved choruses."

“THE REVEREND PEYTON'S BIG BAND actually isn't that big. It's kinda like your husky pal everyone calls "Tiny." The young, modest three-piece from Indianapolis makes up for its size deficiency with a high-energy sound steeped in classic Blues tradition. With just acoustic guitar, the occasional dobro, a minimal drum kit and the always reliable washboard, the trio concocts a rousing, hyper and authentic brand of Blues that sounds
like what might come out of that secret meth lab nestled deep in the backwaters of the Mississippi delta. But the pumping adrenaline doesn't take anything away from the trio's virtuosic grasp on the genre. The Rev.
Peyton has a stirring voice dripping with the hallowed, life-worn distinctiveness of the masters, while brother Jayme Peyton (drums) and The Rev's wife, "Washboard" Breezy, stir up a tornadic rhythmic whirl (the Rev's
acoustic guitar work is as equally frenetic and skilled). See, size doesn't matter, especially when it comes to from-the-soul, gutbucket Blues music.” - MIKE BREEN, Cincinnati CityBeat

http://www.bigdamnband.com/

San Francisco's Madera Road is comprised of Liana Allday (Ha! the Disco Ah!, Jeffrey Luck Lucas), Marc Dantona (This Union Standard, Walking Songs, The Bill Swansn Band), Andrew Kitchen (Transmission Trio, This Union Standard) and Jason Kocol (Impaled, Puny Humans). Their music is enough to make you miss your dead dog, make out with strangers, and stumble home drunk (in no specific order).
THE BARFEEDERS
Alcohol…Good God…Alcohol is probably responsible for this entire mess. Without alcohol it’s doubtful The Bar Feeders would speak to one another very often. Without alcohol they wouldn’t play so obnoxiously fast .(It’s a little known fact that they do so only to hide the endless mistakes and fuck-ups that invariably materialize as a result of their refusal to perform in a state even remotely resembling sobriety.) Without alcohol they would never have forged that kind of indestructible bond that can only come to be when three judgment impaired musicians get loaded and climb to the top of the Bay Bridge at 2am and spend the rest of the night wondering how the hell to get down. Without alcohol they would surely lack the sufficient social skills to hand out fliers or make friends who would come see them play.

HONKY
"The arrival of Honky comes as a welcome slap in the face of canned music and its robotic consumers. This messed-up, tore-down Texas trio churns out a marvelously basic, dirty, stoner-rock grind, all industrial- strength riffs and delightfully sleaze-slanted lyrics... Honky's dog-eared, dopey brand of rock atmospherics is a propitious reminder of how forceful a simple dose of regressive, scabby rock & roll can be."
Crosstops, performers of music of the trucker-punk variety. Singing songs about the open road, little white pills, drinking and a roll in the hay, these boys will amaze you with their musical diversity and tickle your funnybone.
APPLESEED CAST
"Formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, Appleseed Cast released its first record, The End of The Ring Wars, a mere six months after forming. Looking for greener pastures, the band relocated to Lawrence, KS in 1998 and began endlessly touring in the United States and Europe for the next five years. Through the bands next five releases on Deep Elm, they underwent several line-up changes. After releasing the critically acclaimed Low Level Owl series, they began to capture the eyes and ears of new fans, especially Tiger Style Records. The quintet features Christopher Crisci (guitars, vocals), Aaron Pillar (guitar), Marc Young (bass), Josh Baruth (drums), and Jordan Geiger (keys). Citing influences as diverse as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Sex Pistols, Appleseed Cast is ready for you to sit up and take notice."

MINUS STORY
"One of Lawrence's most distinctive voices is Minus Story, a five-piece fronted by the rawboned voice and frame of Jordan Geiger (also the former keyboardist for The Appleseed Cast). "No Rest for Ghosts" is the band's fourth full-length and second for the Bloomington-based Jagjaguwar label (also home to current tour-mates Okkervil River). Like most Jagjaguwar artists, Minus Story plays an adventurous brand of music that both endears them to loyal fans and precludes a quick rise to notoriety. That's not to say the band is inaccessible - they just require a bit of investment.
The album's foundation is a bunch of perfectly hummable folk songs peppered with existentialist lyrics."

THE RUM DIARY
"The California quartet weld together a hearty helping of of double percussion with deep swathes of melodious bass guitar, atmospheric guitars and keyboards, and gentle male vocals to create impressionistic indie rock of epic proportions. Like the groups to which they are most often compared - Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Three Mile Pilot, Pinback, Tristeza, etc. - The Rum Diary excels at constructing mood music more than "proper" songs."
"20 Minute Loop is one of the more refreshing musical experiences I've had in months and months. Decline of Day practically begs for stupid music review fantasy hybrid-type descriptions. So here goes: say you've got XTC. Now subtract the TC, and pair the remainder of John Doe and Exene Cervenka with J. Robbins in a six-by-six cell haunted by Frank Black's muse, with only a Radiohead CD, a Flannery O'Connor novel, and occasional visits from the members of Seely to break the psychosis." --Pitchfork.com
"Tracker, the musical alias for John Askew, who trades his time between musician and label president, delivers a strikingly beautiful, stark collection of acoustic and light electric endowment with Polk, the band's latest. Late night, coffee-shop folk turned into rock with ambiance, Polk can at times be unsettling, remaining majestic the rest of the time. Askew, with the help of friends, creates a vibrant, if not modest album, one that has all the songwriting prowess and indie-rock flavor of some of the hottest bands, with twice the energy and creativeness."

Anybody else excited for the David Grisman show Friday night? It's a rare treat to see Grisman with a straight-up bluegrass band. The only other times in recent memory for the Grisman Bluegrass Experience are Christmas times at the Freight or the Albany Schools music program benefits... and those are short sets without proper libations being available. This should rock. Who's in?

My favorite SXSW band is playing at 12 Galaxies Friday!

Yes, it's true. The most memorable performance for me from this past year at SXSW, Mark Mallman is playing at the 12 G's this Thursday. This maniac kicks some serious ass. Also, if you haven't seen the Herms, these kids rock it pretty good too.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Thursday, October 13

Mark Mallman
The Herms
Side on Sound

MARK MALLMAN
Badman recording artist that holds the world record for longest rock song ever written, the 52.4 hour "Marathon 2".

"Minneapolis' own glam superstar has more heart than Interpol, less pretense than Franz Ferdinand and a sense of retro that seems entirely genuine and anything but simple nostalgia."

THE HERMS..."They make the familiar sound foreign, they spot out that reflex mechanism of ours that yearns for nostalgia and they tap it with a ball-peen hammer, and the sensation feels funny and natural.
Nate Cavalieri- SF Weekly
Www.theherms.com

Fronted by Avante-garde film maker, Kean Levreault, Side on Sound has a rock n' roll edge, with indie hooks. Driving bass lines, cave-man drums, noisy guitars with sweet undertones, and aggressive vocals round out songs about living in the big city. "Making Fun of Prostitutes" and "Plunging
Neckline" are the quirky, esthetic, rock n' roll side of Side on Sound.
The shows are more rock than pop. The band consists of former members of The Cave In's, Delta Song, Corduroy Confession, and others. Recent shows with The Apes, Sky Pilots and other local bands have introduced Side On Sound to the San Francisco scene.
THE MASS
"Black/Death/Thrash/Jazz Metal? Is that too much? You have to hear this band to tell me...what kind of music is this? It fucking ROCKS, I know that much! "The Mass" hails from Oakland, California and their 2nd CD, "Perfect Picture Of Wisdom And Boldness" further refines one of the most original sounding "Metal" genre's I've heard in a while.

The texture can almost be tasted along with the unexpected jazziness sprinkled throughout, almost random, definitely eclectic. This stuff weaves and crawls, then pounces on it's willing victims and shreds them apart. It's dark...it's brutal...and it's kind of creepy, I like it."
PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER
"And it’s a righteous racket, coming off like Chicago’s Joan of Arc on ketamin. Imagine, if you will, Tim Kinsella and co revelling in a glorious drugs-fuelled bacchanalia of ear-wrestling dissonance, these proud experimentalists intoxicated with a raw sexual energy that sees them savagely attacking their instruments, choking saxophones of their beloved jazz and strangling the piano of it’s classical roots with a blasphemous atonal beating..."
"San Diego-based hardcore outfit comprised of SCOTT (CLIKITAT IKATOWI, HEROIN), MATT (HEROIN), RUSSELL (CAMERA OBSCURA, CHAMPAGNE KISS), and ADAM (ESTRANGED). Burning fast hardcore in the vein of Double O, Die Kreuzen, Battalion of Saints, Articles of Faith, and the Offenders, with a dash of modern HC, and some trippy effects thrown in as well."
VICTORIA WILLIAMS
"Despite a successful career as a idiosyncratic country-folk performer, Victoria Williams was perhaps best known as a songwriter; thanks, ironically enough, to a tribute album recorded in her honor. Born in Louisiana in 1959, Williams taught herself to play the guitar while still in her teens, and soon began composing songs. In college, she joined her first band, the G.W. Korners. After spending some time on the road, she ended up in California in 1979, where she was a regular at Los Angeles' famed Troubadour Club's "Hoot Nights." After first returning to Louisiana with the intent of forming a band, she moved back to L.A., where she performed on Venice Beach and ultimately signed a recording contract which proved fruitless.

Soon after, Williams met musician Peter Case, formerly of the Plimsouls. Not only did they form an act together -- a jug band-like trio named the Incredibly Strung Out Band -- but the couple also married. Finally, Williams made her solo recording debut in 1987 with Happy Come Home, a collection showcasing her vivid songcraft as well as her off-kilter, squeaky vocal style. After the record was released, Williams starred in a documentary by the filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker. In 1989, she and Case divorced; a follow-up record, Swing the Statue!, appeared in 1990.

In 1992, while opening for Neil Young, Williams began experiencing a numb feeling in her hands which made it increasingly difficult to play her guitar. Upon visiting a doctor, she was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disorder multiple sclerosis. The medical bills quickly piled up, and like many musicians, she was not covered by health insurance. In response, her manager began assembling friends and fans to record Williams' songs for a benefit album; the result, 1993's Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams, featured the likes of Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Matthew Sweet, the Jayhawks, and Soul Asylum, whose rendition of "Summer of Drugs" was the record's first single. Due to its all-star lineup, Sweet Relief far outsold any of Williams' own efforts, raising not only funds for her medical treatment but her visibility within the musical community as well. Additionally, the record's success enabled Williams to establish the Sweet Relief Fund, created to assist other musicians with health problems; in 1996, a second tribute record, honoring the partially paralyzed singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt, was released.

In 1994, Williams issued Loose, a varied collection featuring duets with Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner and the Jayhawks' Mark Olson, Williams' second husband. A year later, she and her Loose Band released This Moment in Toronto, a live career overview which also offered a handful of standards ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Imagination") as well as one new song, "Graveyard." Her fourth solo album, Musings of a Creek Dipper, was released in 1998. Two years later, Williams issued her strongest effort date with Water to Drink. In 2002, she recorded an album of standards entitled Sings Some Ol' Songs. Her renditions of "Moon River," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "My Funny Valentine" breathed new life thanks to Williams' impeccable touch. ~

On record, at least, that's Victoria, B.C., native Carolyn Mark's trademark—along with a throaty, casually huge voice that seems made for rock until you hear her twist a vowel or two in the name of a long-bygone Nashville. Maybe Mark is tired of comparisons with her best-known duet partner, fellow Corn Sisters member Neko Case: The highlight of "Vincent Gallo," from last year's great The Pros and Cons of Collaboration, was Mark smirking, "He was hanging out with me and Neko/And then Neko had to go, thank God." Either way, Just Married pairs Mark with a series of folks you've likely never heard of. None of them trumps Mark vocally or personalitywise, but most of them keep up. "Fireworks," sung with the honeyed-gruff NQ Arbuckle, is the sound of a tingle becoming a chill: "Said you like fireworks?/Well, I'll give you fireworks/Come on, you coward/Burn my schoolhouse down." "Done Something Wrong" is '60s Stax with an undermixed rhythm section, complete with horns-led bridge and Mark and co-vocalist Ford Pier joshing each other like a northern Otis and Carla, and with Pier's squalling soul-squeal near the end and Mark throwing in a nice modern twist: "We've been through this before/It's that stupid Internet." And when Mark and Luke Doucet cover the hoariest country standard of them all, Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," they do it slow and drunkenly, which is to say, honorably."
BERMUDA TRIANGLE SERVICE
"Local foursome Bermuda Triangle Service make haunting, country-kissed laments to take with you to the bar, the bedroom and the grave. The intoxicating languor of the band's debut full-length, High Swan Dive, recalls the sublime air and poetic charm of Neko Case and Mazzy Star, balancing precariously on an emotional tightrope between sultry and weepy."
CARTA
A studio project for most of 2003/4 that has involved a variety of Bay Area musicians including members of Charles Atlas, Sanchez, Dart, Communique, Speedboat, and Scuba (from Boston), Carta's lineup solidified in 2005 as an instrumental quartet capable of playing live. Delicate rhodes tones, delayed guitars, explosive drums; the band has now been joined by Sarah Bell on keyboards, melodica, and vocals. Often accompanied live by films of a desolate and nostalgic nature. Carta's album "Silence Speaks Your Name" will be released next year.
ROSIN COVEN
"Imagine, if you will, the raw sexiness of cabaret complemented by moth-eaten aesthetic flourishes -- the operatic purring of a lead chanteuse named Midnight Rose, a gloomy bass jokily overlaid with a whiny vibraphone, and the ominous enchantment of commedia dell'arte puppetry. Naturally, we're describing Rosin Coven, the self-titled "World's Premiere Pagan Lounge Ensemble," the kind of act that has genre dogmatists scratching their heads. An umpteen-piece band full of pale-faced, velvet-clad cool cats playing everything from cello and contrabass to accordion, the group falls on a continuum between Rocky Horror camp and medieval danse macabre. The members of Rosin Coven, a Berkeley-based troupe with a vigorous following, look and sound like well-traveled carnies with formidable heaps of classical training; the roguish ensemble is even easy on the eyes."

BARBEZ
"As for Barbez's "Strange", wow, I'm not even ready to talk about it yet. One wants to say "Lynchian." The first thing you'll notice is the voice, that otherwordly and wonderfully overstated quality like Antony and the Johnsons, and as with Antony, I'm stuck in the "you just gotta hear this" phase. According to their one-sheet, they're a multi-culti ensemble named for an equally polyglot neighborhood in Paris. Their membership includes a theremin virtuoso, a Russian dancer, and a modified Palm Pilot player. Bob Moog wears a Barbez t-shirt through much of the documentary about him. The operatic peaks are chilling and sublime, a little frightening as well. I feel as if this music may be doing unnatural things in my brain without me realizing it, like acid that takes too long to kick in - you keep eating more and suddenly, you're a gibbering lunatic." -Moistworks

It has been decided by the council that NOW is time to re-enter the Earth's atmopsphere and bestow their musical and artistic findings on the glorious Earth masses...."
"Kristen Hersh is something of a musical legend. Having formed her first band, the Throwing Muses, at the tender age of 19, she spent the best part of a decade traversing the American underground scene helping to forge, along with label mates The Pixies and The Breeders, the seminal sounds of '80s indie rock. In the years following the band's demise, five beautifully crafted acoustic albums were recorded in which the ghosts of Kristin's mental illness were exorcised with candid admission. In 50 Ft Wave the guitars are plugged back in but the intensity prevails. Despite each members' previous credentials, 50 Foot Wave are most definitely their own band. Sure, Throwing Muses hinted at the harder edge of alternative music, but this band are more thrashy, more up-tempo and, essentially, more electrifying."

"Joining the list of bands proving that girls can rock as hard (if not harder) than boys are Vervein, an indie rock quartet whose sound is simultaneously dreamy and hard-edged (think Azure Ray meets the Breeders). On their 2003 debut, Vast Low Cities (Angrymoose), the San Francisco band communicate a dark, confident sexiness. The resonating guitars and unabashed, smoky vocals are delicate yet brazen, like a beautiful, exotic flower that also happens to be carnivorous. Set to release a follow-up album this fall, Vervein are poised to give new meaning to (dare we say it?) girl power."

As an art form, musical improvisation is often the most inspiring, exasperating, overwhelmingly emotional interchange between performer and spectator. It takes generous talent, and serious guts for a musician to take the stage without a script. On the recieving end, the listener must approach the music with a liberated mind, ready to be challenged and hopeful for a worthwhile outcome. Every experience I've have with local improv gurus The Supplicants has left me radiant, fulfilled in the way only the most profound spiritual encounters can. Composed of some of the Bay Area's most accomplished jazz musicians...the band soars with the fiery grace of A Love Supreme-era Coltrane. - Jonathan Zwickel (SF Bay Guardian) check 'em out @ 12 Galaxies on Tuesday Sept. 13th
